This medium swing composition opens with short statements between the ensemble and brushes. The arrangement features trumpet and tenor saxophone soloists who play of the change to “Just in Time.” A two-chorus saxophone soli and a demanding shout chorus will provide a challenge for most ensembles.

French composer Lili Boulanger (1893-1918) composed Vieille Prière Bouddhique (Old Buddhist Prayer) between 1914 and 1917. Originally written for tenor, chorus, and orchestra, this sacred work has been arranged for tenor, choir, organ, brass, and percussion. In addition to the tenor soloist, the work also features a flute soloist. This work includes both the French and English translations of this Eastern text that is described as a “daily prayer for the whole universe.”

Zach was commissioned by Keith Javors for the Univerity of North Florida Jazz Ensemble I and recorded on UNF’s And the Melody Still Lingers On. Strong soloists are needed for this chart which features piano, trumpet and alto saxophone on some difficult harmonies. However, less advanced groups can still handle the ensemble parts. No doubles are needed.
